Vegetables and fruits continued to set a new record of export sales and re-establish the achievement of surpassing crude oil in exports.
The export turnover of vegetables and fruits in Vietnam recently has increased every year. Specifically, if in 2016, export turnover reached USD 2.4 billion, an increase of 33.6% compared to 2015; in 2017 export turnover reached USD 3.5 billion, an increase of 42.5% compared to 2016; and in 2018 export turnover reached USD 3.52 billion, an increase of 10.8% compared to 2017.

With the results achieved in 2018 of over USD 3.5 billion, export turnover of vegetables and fruits has surpassed that of other commodities such as tea, pepper, and rice.  Especially pepper - has been one of the key export items, contributing a large proportion to the country's export turnover. If in 2016 and 2017, pepper export turnover reached over USD 1 billion, only USD 1 billion less than that of vegetables, in 2018, the difference has reached over USD 3 billion. This shows that fruits and vegetables are becoming key export products in the coming period of time.

Vietnam's vegetables and fruits are exported mainly to China, the United States, and Southeast Asian countries, EU, South Korea, and Japan - these are markets with high turnover of over USD 100 million; of which China is a market with a large proportion of 73% USD or 2.78 billion, an increase of 5.03% compared to 2017.

In the second place turnover is US with USD 139.9 million, an increase of 37.01% compared to 2017, the turnover in December 2018 alone is USD 13.92 million, an increase of 3.55% and an increase of 44.29% compared to December 2017.

Next is Southeast Asia and the EU countries which all account for more than 3% for each market.

Overall, as of the end of 2018, the export turnover of vegetables and fruits of Vietnam to the markets achieved good growth rates, these markets accounted for 69.56%; of which Cambodia is a market with a remarkable increase of 2.6 times (i.e. 152.39% increase) although only reached USD 2.57 million; the export turnover in December 2018 to this market alone reached USD 157,000, an increase of 68.41% compared to November 2018 but if compared with December 2017, it decreased by 16.57%. On the other hand, Vietnam reduced its export of fruits and vegetables to Indonesia market with export turnover to this market down 52.75%, equivalent to USD 1.49 million.

In addition to the strong growth in Cambodian market, the export to Australia also gained good growth rates, i.e. 45.55% or USD 42 million. Export turnover in December 2018 alone reached USD 4.8 million, an increase of 6.09% compared to November 2018 and an increase of 2.3 times (i.e. 127.64%) compared to December 2017.

Commenting on the fruit and vegetable market in the coming time period, Vietnam Fruit and Vegetables Association said that the potential of the world market as well as the change in the value chain of Vietnamese vegetables and fruits is very promising. Even in the domestic market, with an increasingly professional fruit and vegetable system, the business of supplying fruit and vegetable traceability labels to major cities is growing very fast. This is a good signal, an important step for the fruit and vegetable industry to move towards professionalization, ensuring supply for large urban market and for export.
