Agribank – A pillar in bringing financial services to rural areas
07/05/2026
Within Vietnam’s banking system, Agribank carries a unique mission as the leading financial institution supporting investment in agriculture, farmers and rural areas. After nearly four decades of growth, Agribank has not only become one of the country’s largest banks but has also played a pivotal role in channeling capital into the “Tam Nong” sector, contributing to the advancement of financial inclusion in rural areas.
As of the end of 2025, Agribank’s total assets exceeded VND 2.6 quadrillion, while total mobilized funds surpassed VND 2.35 quadrillion. Outstanding loans to the economy reached nearly VND 2 quadrillion, of which approximately VND 1.3 quadrillion was directed to the agriculture and rural sector, accounting for around 64% of the Bank’s total outstanding loans. Notably, Agribank currently holds more than 30% of the agricultural and rural credit market share across Vietnam’s banking system.
These figures clearly demonstrate Agribank’s leading role in supporting the development of the “Tam Nong” sector. In practical terms, more than one in every three dong invested in agriculture and rural areas comes from Agribank. This is not only a reflection of the Bank’s lending scale but also evidence of its consistent commitment to directing financial resources to the right beneficiaries, including individuals, farming households, businesses, and other economic actors in rural areas.
Beyond its lending scale, Agribank’s extensive network remains one of its key strengths. With thousands of transaction offices nationwide, reaching commune-level locations, remote and mountainous areas, border regions, and islands, Agribank has built a solid foundation for promoting financial inclusion and bringing banking services closer to rural communities.
Alongside its nationwide network, Agribank has established and developed more than 62,000 lending groups in cooperation with socio-political organizations such as the Vietnam Farmers’ Union and the Vietnam Women’s Union. This model helps deliver credit directly to local communities in a convenient manner, reduces transaction costs, and enhances the effectiveness of capital utilization. It also contributes to expanding access to formal credit, strengthening repayment awareness, fostering community connectivity, and supporting sustainable production development.
Agribank is also the pioneer in deploying mobile transaction points using specialized vehicles. This model helps bring banking services to areas where permanent transaction offices are not yet available. These mobile banking units provide services equivalent to those offered at conventional transaction offices while enabling local residents to access financial services in a convenient, safe, and cost-effective manner.
Through its extensive network, lending group system, and mobile banking model, Agribank has been steadily narrowing the gap in access to financial services between rural and urban areas. This serves as an important foundation for bringing formal banking capital closer to local communities and supporting socio-economic development in agricultural and rural areas.
As the leading state-owned commercial bank serving the “Tam Nong” sector, Agribank continues to affirm its role as a pillar in bringing financial services to rural areas, channeling capital to priority sectors and contributing to financial inclusion and sustainable development.
