Agribank brings banking services closer to rural communities through mobile and digital channels
28/09/2026
The dispersed nature of rural production, seasonal demand for capital, varying loan sizes and differences in local transport conditions all create distinct requirements for banking services in rural areas.
In response, Agribank has developed a range of complementary service channels in addition to its traditional branch network. Mobile banking units help bring banking services directly to remote communities, while digital platforms enable customers to carry out transactions with fewer constraints related to time and distance.
Agribank currently operates 68 mobile transaction points using specialized vehicles, serving a wide range of rural, remote and hard-to-reach areas. These mobile services help customers reduce both travel time and related costs when accessing banking services.
The mobile transaction points provide more than credit-related services such as loan disbursement and debt collection. Customers can also make deposits, send and receive money, open and use bank accounts, access card services and use a range of other banking facilities.
By bringing services closer to where people live and work, Agribank enables customers to access banking services more conveniently, particularly those who live far from branches and transaction offices.
From a credit-access perspective, mobile services help narrow the gap between customers’ funding needs and available banking service points. Customers can speak directly with bank staff, learn about relevant policies, complete required procedures and carry out loan-related transactions within their own local areas.
This is especially relevant for small-scale production loans, where travel time and transportation costs can significantly affect a customer’s decision to seek formal bank financing.
Alongside its face-to-face service channels, Agribank is also expanding access through digital banking.
Through Agribank Plus and other digital platforms, customers can carry out a variety of transactions, including money transfers, payments, account management and deposit-related services, without having to visit a branch in person. This is particularly useful for customers in rural areas, where financial needs may arise outside normal banking hours or in locations far from urban centers.
Agribank is also gradually introducing selected credit products through digital channels.
Since April 2026, Agribank has implemented nationwide its online loan product secured by customers’ deposit balances on Agribank Plus. Under this product, the loan application, contract signing and disbursement processes are completed online.
The availability of this service gives customers an additional way to access credit. Where transactions and products can be delivered digitally, customers have more options to choose the channel that best suits their circumstances, while Agribank’s branches and in-person service points continue to support needs that require direct consultation, appraisal or assistance.
The combination of mobile transaction points and digital banking reflects a broader diversification of Agribank’s service delivery in rural areas. One channel brings physical banking services closer to local communities, while the other enables customers to access services more conveniently through digital technology.
Each channel has its own advantages, but both support the same objective of improving access to formal financial services. Customers who require direct assistance can meet Agribank staff through mobile transaction points in their local areas, while those using services that can be delivered online have greater flexibility in both timing and method of transaction.
Diversifying service channels therefore helps Agribank respond more effectively to differences in geography, customer needs and preferred transaction methods across rural communities.
For Agribank, improving rural access to banking services involves more than expanding credit. It also requires the development of suitable service channels that allow financial resources and banking services to reach customers in more convenient ways. By combining local, face-to-face services with digital platforms, Agribank is providing rural customers with greater flexibility in managing transactions and accessing formal financial services.
