Q1: Export of forest products has become a highlight of the agricultural sector
In the first quarter of 2021, the trade surplus of timber and forest products reached USD 3.24 billion, an increase of 43.4% over the same period last year. 5 markets including: USA, Japan, China, EU and Korea account for 90% of total export value.
According to the Vietnam Administration of Forestry, (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development), the export value of timber and forest products in March 2021 is estimated at USD 1,52 billion; the cumulative number for the first three months of 2021 (quarter I/2021) is estimated at USD 3.94 billion, an increase of 41.5% over the same period. In which, the export of timber and wood products reached USD 3.69 billion, an increase of 41.5%; non-timber forest product exports reached USD 243 million, an increase of 38.4%.
The main export markets for timber and forest products include: the United States, Japan, China, the EU and South Korea, which account for 90% of the total export value of this category.
In the opposite direction, the import value of timber and wood products in March 2021 is estimated at USD 227 million; the cumulative number for the first 3 months of 2021 is estimated at USD 696 million, an increase of 31% over the same period. The main import markets for timber and forest products are China, the United States, Cameroon, Thailand, and Chile, accounting for about 55% of the total value of timber and forest products imported in the past three months.
Import value of timber and wood products increased due to the increase in raw material prices in the first months of the year, while import demand also increased over the same period.
Therefore, in the first quarter of 2021, this category saw a trade surplus of USD 3.24 billion, an increase of 43.4% over the same period last year.
According to Vietnam Administration of Forestry, since the beginning of the year, localities nationwide have planted 31,498 ha of forests, equal to 116% compared to the same period in 2020, concentrated in a number of provinces in the North, North Central Coast and South Central Coast; in which, protection forest of 192ha, production forest of 31,305ha.
The planted forest area under care is 182,289 ha, equaling 83.4% over the same period in 2020; 63,004 ha zoned for regeneration, equaling 83.3%. Besides, localities have also planted 17.6 million scattered trees of all kinds, equaling 177% over the same period in 2020.
For the development of forests, the units have prepared more than 340.5 million seedlings of all kinds to serve the afforestation plan in 2021, equal to 152% compared with the same period in 2020.
