Wooden furniture exports to Belgium increased by more than 40%

Vietnam is the 10th largest market for wooden furniture to Belgium, reaching USD 17.7 million, an increase of 41.6% compared to the first eight months of 2019.

The latest report on agricultural, forestry and fishery markets on December 10 of the Import and Export Department (Ministry of Industry and Trade) shows that according to data from the International Trade Center (ITC), the value of imported furniture wooden furniture of Belgium in August 2020 reached USD 97.4 million, an increase of 11.6% compared to August 2019.

This is the third consecutive month that Belgium has increased its wooden furniture imports. Accumulated for the first eight months of 2020, Belgian wooden furniture imports reached USD 711.8 million, decreased by 5.9% over the same period in 2019.

In terms of market, nearly 78% of the demand for wooden furniture in Belgium is met by imports (the European average is 50%).

The top four Belgian suppliers, Germany, the Netherlands, China and Poland, provide 57.5% of the total value of Belgian wooden furniture imports.

In particular, Belgium increased its import of wooden furniture from China in the first eight months of 2020, reaching USD 94.4 million, increased by 2.5% over the same period in 2019, the proportion of imports from China increased by 1.1 percentage points.

Notably, Vietnam is the 10th largest wooden furniture supplier for Belgium, reaching USD17.7 million, an increase of 41.6% over the same period in 2019.

The proportion of imports from Vietnam accounted for 2.5% of the total import value, increased by 0.8 percentage points over the same period in 2019.

The Import-Export Department believes that Vietnam will have a chance to boost exports to the Belgian market in the near future.

According to the Centre for Industrial Studies (CSIL) in Italy, Belgium is an important furniture import market, ranking 6th in Europe and 11th in the world. Notably, the increase in Belgian imports from non-EU countries accounts for 23% of Belgian furniture consumption.

In terms of products, living room and dining room furniture, wooden frame chairs are the two main items imported by Belgium in the first eight months of 2020. In which, the proportion of imports of living room and dining room furniture accounts for 40. 4% of the total import value, reaching USD 287.4 million, decreased by 6.6% over the same period in 2019.

The Netherlands, China, France, Poland and Germany are the 5 main markets supplying this commodity to Belgium, accounting for 58% of the total import value.
