Durian exports reached a record

29/06/2023

According to the General Department of Customs, in the first five months of the year, the export value of durian reached more than USD 503 million, 18 times higher than the USD 27.6 million in the same period last year and fruit and vegetable exports in May reached USD 656 million, an increase of 68% compared to the previous month.

Accumulated over the first five months of the year, exports of this commodity group reached more than USD 2 billion, an increase of 43% over the same period in 2022. This is also the best result in the first five months of the year so far.

This impressive result was made possible by the strong growth of the durian category. Accordingly, the export of durian (HS code 0810.60.00) in May increased to a record of USD 332 million, more than 10 times higher than the previous month and the highest ever.

Accumulated over the first five months of the year, the export value of durian fruit reached USD 503 million, 18 times higher than the USD 27.6 million in the same period last year. In which, exports of durian fruit to China amounted to USD 477 million, accounting for 95% of the total export value of this commodity group of the country.

Thus, after being officially exported to China, durian products are contributing greatly to the export turnover of the fruit and vegetable industry, accounting for about 25%.

Earlier at the end of May, the Plant Protection Department (MARD) said that the Department had received a document from the General Administration of Customs of China (GACC) informing the results of reviewing dossiers of durian planting area codes.

Accordingly, to date, Vietnam has 293 growing areas and 115 packing facilities that have been granted official export codes by China to this market.

Currently, the Plant Protection Department is working with the General Administration of Customs of China to agree on the schedule of the next online inspection for about 400 growing areas and 60 durian packing facilities that have been sent to the Chinese side.

After agreeing on the inspection schedule and content, the Department will notify the localities to proactively prepare and coordinate with the Department and the General Administration of Customs of China to implement according to the plan of the General Department of Customs of China.
