Cassava exports are expected to continue to increase in the near future

The Import-Export Department (Ministry of Industry and Trade) cited statistics from the General Department of Vietnam Customs that in May 2022, Vietnam exported nearly 260 thousand tons of cassava and cassava products, worth USD 114.09 million, an increase of 10.6% in volume and 8.6% in value compared to April 2022, an increase of 22.7% in volume and an increase of 33% in value compared to May 2021.
The average export price of cassava and cassava products was at USD 438.8/ton, decreased by 1.8% compared to April 2022, but increased by 8.4% compared to May 2021. Accumulated over the first five months of 2022, the export of cassava and cassava products reached 1.45 million tons, worth USD 630.98 million, increased by 3.7% in volume and 19.3% in value compared to same period in 2021.
For cassava products alone, in May 2022, cassava exports reached 74.13 thousand tons, worth USD 22.36 million, increased by 0.3% in volume, but decreased by 3% in value compared to April 2022; compared to May 2021, an increase of 8% in volume and 21.3% in value.
The average export price was at USD 301.7/ton, decreased by 3.3% compared to April 2022, but increased by 12.3% compared to May 2021. In the first five months of 2022, cassava exports reached 467.27 thousand tons, worth USD 136.66 million, decreased by 17.3% in volume and 5.4% in value over the same period in 2021.
In May 2022, the export of cassava and cassava products to China accounted for 93% of the country's total export volume, reaching 241.67 thousand tons, valued at USD 105.19 million, an increase of 17.6% in volume and an increase of 14.8% in value compared to April 2022; compared to May 2021, an increase of 26.2% in volume and an increase of 36.2% in value.
Accumulated over the first five months of 2022, Vietnam exported 1.33 million tons of cassava and cassava products to China, worth USD 578.14 million, increased by 2.2% in volume and 18.1% in value over the same period in 2021.
Statistics from China Customs also show that in the first four months of 2022, China's import turnover of cassava slices (HS code 071410) reached USD 795.21 million, an increase of 30.1% compared to the same period in 2021
Thailand, Vietnam and Laos are the 3 largest markets for supplying cassava slices to China in the first four months of 2022. Vietnam is the second largest market in supplying cassava slices and starch to China.
